Zena & Rose founder Joanna answers some questions:

Why should I download the guide?

I’ve met many people lacking knowledge or confidence to start a new craft but the guide will tell you all you need to know to get going. It is based on my real life workshop experiences, so I know what the common pitfalls are and how to overcome them. I think I have a unique perspective because I bring a surface pattern designer’s eye to wood block printing.

Why did you write this guide?

The guide brings together our experience of teaching beginners’ workshops. We are often asked the same questions or people find similar things tricky.  So we have distilled all our knowledge into this guide! This is also a way of extending teaching beyond the studio, to reach more people and raise awareness of the craft of wood block printing.

How did you get into wood block printing?

After several years of designing patterns for products using computer software, I felt it was time to get back to hands-on creating. I came across Indian wood block printing and thought it was a good technique to teach pattern design to others. It didn’t take long before I was obsessed. I went to Jaipur in India to see how wood blocks are cut and prints are made by skilled artisans.

Why should people start wood block printing?

It is a very creative and calming technique to practice, plus it’s versatile, there are so many things you can make!

There is not much you need to buy to get started and you only need a small table as a workspace. It is quite accessible and easy to begin creating. There is an instant satisfaction to it.
