How to overcome creative blocks
Why do we get creative blocks?
In our personal experience, creative blocks happen where there is not enough external stimulation from beyond your everyday life. You are stuck in a routine, doing the same things each week and seeing the same people. You are in your comfort zone.
Here are some things we try to do to get out of a creative rut:
Reading - There are a lot of books on how to build creativity. It is a bit like a muscle that needs to be exercised and fed regularly. Reading is a great way to do that. A classic book about creative discipline is called The Artists' Way. We've created a little 'library' in our studio with inspirational pattern books we can dip into any time we are feeling stuck for ideas.
Visiting a new exhibition - one of our favourites is the V&A Museum in London. It doesn't really matter if the subject matter isn't aligned with what you do, the point is that it will spark new ideas.
Meeting a creative friend or going to creative networking event - it is important to keep in touch with other people, especially if you work on your own a lot. You'll find everyone is in the same boat and needs to get out of the house! Finding out about other people's projects can give you a burst of energy.
Go through your art stash of materials and set aside time to mess about! This one is really important and we don't do it enough. Leaving space and time for playing is what our brains need to feel refreshed. An art teacher once told us to try using our less dominant hand to draw and do quick sketches of 1 minute each. This loosening up exercise warms you up and makes you less concerned about the outcome.
Book a craft class you've never done before - there are so many options out there. We love the Class Bento website for creative workshops. Think about something you've always wanted to try and commit! Bring a friend to make it even more fun. This will get the creative flow going again.
Going for a walk in nature - Walking de-stresses the brain and gets your circulation flowing. Observing nature is very powerful and new ideas can pop into your mind when you're walking along.
Visit a new place for inspiration - We will sometimes have a day trip to a new place because novelty sparks ideas. Most recently we went to Farnham which is a World Craft Town and came away with 4 new project ideas based on what we'd seen in the local galleries and arts centre.
