Ray Morimura And Japanese Printing

Ray Morimura is a Japanese woodblock artist who produces the most exquisite work. His signature look involves a complex interplay of contrast, pattern, shape, geometry and scale. The subject matter includes traditional buildings in the countryside and stylised nature. There is a sleek, almost Art Deco look to the prints. To see more of his work check out the Kamal Bakhshi website.

I have taken a couple of wood engraving classes at Morley College in London. Here is my first attempt, which is rather reminiscent of Morimura. Traditionally wood engravers cut into the end grain of lemon wood or box wood to create the design. Wood cutters use the side grain of the wood, a technique I learnt with printmaker Laura Boswell

Until next time my creative crew,
